The West Virginia State Penitentiary is a gothic-style prison located in Moundsville, West Virginia. It operated from 1875 to 1995.

The ten acres for the location for the prison was chosen and purchased on February 7, 1866, since it is approximately twelve miles south of Wheeling, West Virginia, which was the state capital at the time.

North Wagon Gate was the first building constructed on the site. It was made with hand-cut sandstone, which was quarried from a local site. The state used prison labor during the construction process, and work continued on this first phase until 1876.

Investigation & Evidence

Ghostly Image!!?? At the West Virginia State Penitentiary?

This image was taken during the evening investigation outside the boiler room at the West Virginia State Penitentiary by Kathy, Founder of NoVA SPIs right after Co-Founder and investigator, Nancy, 'shot' out of the boiler room after encountering something she felt was rather 'dark.'  She was pacing off to the left of where the picture was taken and very upset... What was the cause of her anger and emotion?  Did whatever it was follow her out into the night?
